The world of weed has its own vast vocabulary with its own jargon, slang, and codes. If you’ve been around the culture for a while, you may have heard or seen someone mention the term “pot nerd.” So what is a pot nerd? What makes somebody a pot nerd, and are you one of them?
Urban Dictionary defines “pot nerd” as “a person who is extremely knowledgeable about all things weed.” That’s a pretty good definition. Short, simple, and accurate.
Pot nerds love weed so much that they’re driven to learn anything and everything about cannabis. As a result, they know probably too much about weed, and they’re always happy to talk about it, read about it, and of course, smoke it.
The pot nerd’s deep knowledge about weed comes primarily out of an even deeper, more intense love for consuming cannabis. That means that a lot of a pot nerd’s expertise comes from firsthand experience. But super hardcore pot nerds also spend time studying and learning about weed and anything related to weed.
Simply put, pot nerds are experts in a wide range of cannabis information, including history, law, cultivation, strains, cannabinoids, terpenes, and on and on.
There are a number of ways to figure out if you’re a pot nerd. Here are some of the tell-tale signs:
Do you love researching, testing, and talking about cannabis gear and products? This would include the simple and mundane pieces of equipment like lighters, grinders, rolling papers, and bowls, all the way up to more techy stuff like dab rigs, cultivation gear, and vaporizers.
If you’re obsessed with cannabis-related paraphernalia, you may be a weed gearhead. And that’s basically a subset of the pot nerd.
Do you know precisely which strains you love the most, and even more, which strains you love based on different situations and circumstances?
More broadly, can you rattle off strain name after strain name and then cite whether or not each one is indica, sativa, or hybrid, as well as the specific characteristics of each strain? If so, you’re probably a pot nerd.
If you can rattle on and on about the origins of the cannabis plant, or go into lengthy discourses about the long and troubled history of cannabis in the U.S. or other parts of the world, then you’re probably a nerd with a penchant for weed history.
Some pot nerds focus their attention on cannabis law. These are the people who know every detail about their local weed laws, including how to avoid getting busted. They probably know how to handle things if they do get busted, too.
Serious pot nerds with a passion for weed law also know all about laws in other parts of the country and world. They know which places are perfect for a 420-themed getaway. Similarly, they also know which places to avoid.
Like law, politics are another area of obsession for many pot nerds. These are the folks who know every country and state that has legalized weed. Even more, they probably know which cities around the world have decriminalized it, too.
Pot nerds who love pot politics will generally know the ins and outs of the legislative process, and they’ll probably know which locations are currently working on marijuana bills. Similarly, pot nerds are up to date on which lawmakers are allies and which ones are enemies of cannabis.
If you regularly describe your experience of smoking, vaping, or dabbing as “terpy” then you’re probably a pot nerd. Terpenes definitely play a key role in the cannabis experience, since they provide the distinctive scent and flavor of each unique strain. But terps are still very much the terrain of serious cannabis connoisseurs.
Growing weed is a whole other ball game. And it is a massive subset of the pot nerd. Cannabis cultivation includes a huge body of knowledge.
For example, if you’re into growing outdoors, you probably know all about things like soil health, pH, plant nutrients, planting techniques, feeding plants, pruning, watering, harvesting, curing, trimming, and on and on.
Most pot nerds know a thing or two about drug tests. They’ve probably had to take one at some point in their life, and chances are good that they failed it.
As a result, true pot nerds will always have something to say about how to pass a drug test. Their methods could be nothing more than longstanding pot myth, but one way or another, a true pot nerd has some sort of go-to technique for passing drug tests.
Pot nerds can generally tell you everything there is to know about the medicinal properties of cannabis. Some pot nerds view the plant as nothing short of a miraculous panacea that can do pretty much anything.
But even the more grounded pot nerd will still be able to talk about cannabinoids, the endocannabinoid system, and the specifics about how different strains affect different health conditions.
Cannabis culture is huge. This includes the classic stoner aesthetics of black lights, trippy artwork, incense, and hemp jewelry. But it also includes the more updated culture of refined consumption in an age of increasing legalization.
Weed culture also includes music, movies, TV shows, clothing, fashion, and other forms of pop culture. If you’re a true pot nerd, you have a full bibliography of things to watch or listen to the next time you get high.
Do you know how to construct makeshift pipes out of soda cans? Are you an expert at cooking and baking with cannabis? A pro roller? Can you quickly fire up a dab rig? Know how to charge, pack, and use any vaporizer on the market?
Basically, a pot nerd can step into any scenario imaginable, and they will instantly know the best way to consume weed. If this describes you, you’re probably a pot nerd.
Pot nerds are everywhere in the world of weed. While they can sometimes geek out on the minutiae of cannabis, they’re also the folks whose absolute passion for all things weed-related keep the entire scene active, vibrant, and moving forward.
